How SZABIST GPA and CGPA are calculated
SZABIST grades on marks against a fixed table published in its Student Handbook, so your letter depends on your own score rather than the class distribution. What makes SZABIST unusual is the shape of that table. It is unlike any other university here, and a generic HEC calculator will get almost every SZABIST course wrong.
Two things stand out. First, the failure line is 55%, not 50%. A 52 that would earn a D almost anywhere else in Pakistan is a straight F at SZABIST, and there are no D grades on the scale at all. C- (1.50) is the lowest passing grade, covering 55–59.
Second, the grade points step in quarters near the top: A 3.75, A- 3.50, B+ 3.25, B- 2.75, C+ 2.50. Only A+ (4.00), B (3.00), C (2.00) and F (0.00) land on familiar values. Assuming .67/.33 increments will overstate most SZABIST grades.
The Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersAll grade points earned are averaged towards the final grade point for graduation. Where a course is retaken, SZABIST uses the better grade. An F scores 0.00 while its credit hours still count.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's SGPA
A 15-credit-hour semester using SZABIST's quarter-step grade points.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A+ (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 3 CH, A (3.75) | 3 × 3.75 = 11.25 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, A- (3.50) | 3 × 3.50 = 10.50 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, B+ (3.25) | 3 × 3.25 = 9.75 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 11.25 + 10.50 + 9.75 + 9.00 = 52.50 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 |
Example 2: the 55% failure line
A 3-credit course marked at 52%, scored at SZABIST against a university with a 50% pass line.
| At SZABIST 52 is below 55, so it is an F | 3 × 0.00 = 0.00 |
|---|---|
| Elsewhere 52 would earn a D | 3 × 1.00 = 3.00 |
| Effect on a 15 CH semester | 3.00 ÷ 15 = 0.20 of SGPA |
SZABIST University Grading Scale
SZABIST's grading table from its Student Handbook. Read it carefully before comparing with any other university: the points step in 0.25s, C- (1.50) is the lowest passing grade, and everything below 55% is an F.
| Grade | Marks % | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 90 and above | 4.00 |
| A | 85 – 89 | 3.75 |
| A- | 80 – 84 | 3.50 |
| B+ | 75 – 79 | 3.25 |
| B | 70 – 74 | 3.00 |
| B- | 66 – 69 | 2.75 |
| C+ | 63 – 65 | 2.50 |
| C | 60 – 62 | 2.00 |
| C- | 55 – 59 | 1.50 |
| F | Below 55 | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 52% really a fail at SZABIST?
Yes. SZABIST's grading table puts F at anything below 55, with C- covering 55–59. Most Pakistani universities set the pass line at 50, so students comparing notes across campuses routinely get this wrong. If a course is sitting in the low 50s at SZABIST, it is failing, not scraping through.
Does SZABIST have a D grade?
No. The scale runs A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C- and then F. There is no D+ or D anywhere on it. C- (1.50) is the lowest passing grade, which is why the SZABIST pass line sits so much higher than the national norm.
Why is a SZABIST A worth 3.75 and not 4.00?
Because A+ is the 4.00 grade at SZABIST, covering 90–100, while a plain A covers 85–89 and carries 3.75. The scale then steps down in quarters: A- 3.50, B+ 3.25, B- 2.75, C+ 2.50. Only A+, B, C and F sit on values you would recognise from the HEC table.
What CGPA do I need at SZABIST?
It depends on the level, and the handbook sets both a graduation grade and a maintenance CGPA. C (60–62) is marked as the undergraduate degree requirement, C+ for Masters, B- for MS and B for PhD. Separately, the minimum CGPA below which you may face probation is 1.75 for undergraduates, 2.25 for Masters, 2.5 for MS and 2.75 for PhD.
If I retake a course, which grade counts?
The better one. SZABIST's handbook states that where a course is retaken, the better grade is used for the calculation. Enter only that attempt. Including both would count the credit hours twice.
What do S, U, I, W and J mean on my transcript?
They are non-graded results: S satisfactory, U unsatisfactory, I incomplete, W withdrawn and J result withheld. None carry grade points, so leave those courses out of the calculator. Note that an unresolved I defaults to an F if it is not completed before the deadline.
Can I ask for grace marks to cross a band?
No. The handbook is explicit that there is no provision for giving or requesting grace marks. Some SZABIST bands are very tight. C+ is only 63–65. So the exact marks you earn in each assessment matter more here than at universities with wider bands.
